OKLAHOMA ANNOUNCES STATE DESIGN AWARDS WINNERS
(Stillwater) The Oklahoma
statewide chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA
Oklahoma) announced the winning entries for the 2011 AIA
Oklahoma Awards of Excellence program in Stillwater, Oklahoma
last week. The Awards of Excellence program was founded to
promote excellence in the built environment in Oklahoma and to
contribute to the professional growth of the architect.
Eighty-one projects were entered and juried for consideration.
The jury selected
10 projects for recognition in the Awards of Excellence
Program.
Four entries in the
competition received the most prestigious Honor Award. Those
recipients were:

Jurors for the competition
were recruited from distinguished firms across the nation and
traveled to Oklahoma to jury and present the awards. Jurors
included:

Randy Brown, FAIA,
Randy Brown Architects, Omaha, Nebraska. Brown
founded Randy Brown Architects in
1993 with the mission to bring innovative and artistic
architectural designs to his home state of Nebraska. He has
a Master of Architecture from U.C.L.A. where he was awarded
the AIA Henry Adams Award, and a Bachelor of Interior
Architecture from Kansas State University, where he
graduated Magna Cum Laude. Brown is frequently recognized
by the national and international design community resulting
in numerous publications, and over 100 design awards
including 44 AIA awards, nine of which are National. He has
held many academic positions including the Hyde
Distinguished Professor at the University of Nebraska at
Lincoln. Brown is LEED-AP certified and as a member of the
USGBC, Randy Brown Architects utilizes green building
technologies to create healthy living / working environments
in his projects.

Ken
Carpenter, AIA,
Interim Dean, Louisiana State University
College of Art & Design. He began
his
tenure at LSU as Dean in 1986 and continued as Dean for eleven
years. Since that time, he has twice been named Interim Dean of
the College of Art &
Design. On two occasions (1997 & 2007-2008), Carpenter served
one year appointments as Interim Executive Director of
International Programs at LSU and for five years he served as
LSU Faculty Athletic Representative for the NCAA & SEC and Chair
of the LSU Athletic Council. Before arriving at LSU, Ken served
as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Architecture at
both Iowa State University and Ball State University. He began
his academic career at Clemson University as a faculty member in
the Department of Architecture after receiving his Master of
Architecture from the University of Minnesota in 1967. Prior to
that, Mr. Carpenter had become licensed to practice architecture
in the State of New York and had worked for three international
firms in New York City. He received his Bachelor of
Architecture degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1962.
Carpenter has authored or coauthored a number of research grants
and exhibited photography in several shows, including the LSU
College of Art & Design Faculty Show and one-man exhibitions of
his work at the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum and the Dallas
Chapter AIA.

Rick del Monte, AIA,
managing director, The Beck Group, Dallas, Texas. Del Monte
has experience in building design dating back to 1984, nine
years of which were spent with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates
in New York. As a managing director of the firm and head of
the design group, he is involved in all projects Beck’s
architecture group touches and co-manages the central
division of Beck, which is the largest in the company, with
five regional offices, 70 architects and 250 construction
personnel. He received his M Architecture from Clemson and
his MS in Architecture from Columbia University.
AIA Oklahoma is the state component for the American Institute
of Architects in Oklahoma, representing over 525 licensed
architects statewide.
